TROPICAL FOREST

AMONG NATURAL LUNGS

The Natural Reserve where Tapirus Lodge is nestled is a protected area consisting of 475 hectares. It adjoins the Braulio Carrillo National Park in a strip of over 5 kilometers.

The Tropical Rainforest biome’s predominant characteristic is its importance within the planet; it holds two thirds of all the world’s flora and fauna. In Costa Rica, this biome presents an overwhelming abundance of springs and rivers of clear, crystalline waters, plus a great quantity of insects and microorganisms just waiting to be discovered. All this vegetation takes over the cleaning of the air we breathe. Tapirus Lodge is lucky enough to be nestled within this essential biome of the planet.

  • Temperature 33º Max - 22º Min
  • Precipitation 4,000 - 6,000 mm / year
  • Dry period 0 to 2 months
  • Strata 5 (3 are arboreal)
  • Epiphytes Abundant
  • Canopy height 40m - 60m

FOREST LEVELS MAJESTIC

Among the levels of the rainforest there are invaluable characteristics.

  • The highest biodiversity density of terrestrial environments on the planet.
  • Evergreen broad-leaved vegetation as adaptation to the highest non-seasonal precipitation rate throughout the year.
  • The most widespread terrestrial environment in Costa Rica, but unfortunately the most fragmented by human action.
  • EMERGENT LAYER

Level where tall isolated trees protrude above the canopy.

    45m onwards
  • CANOPY

It is made up of the tops of the most populated trees in the forest.

    30-45m
  • UNDERGROWTH

Young, medium-sized trees, tall bushes, and large ferns.

    15-30m
  • SHRUBS

Small shrubs, ferns and other small seedlings.

    0-15m
  • FLOOR

High humidity species area, such as fungi. It is easily accessible.

FLORA PARADISIACAL FLORA

As the tall leafy tree is predominant in the Tropical Forest, it restricts sunlight on the ground. This causes that the plants are not dense in the ground, which facilitates the passage for the animals. In addition, by restricting sunlight, their cups are filled with epiphytes, such as this exquisite Bromeliad, to reach sunlight.

We can observe the following species of flora:

  • Orchids
  • Mosses
  • Lichens

The Bromeliads, growing in the heights, play a fundamental role of "water containers" for their cup shape. They serve as water dispensers for wildlife that is easy to prey on the ground.

FAUNA STUNNING FAUNA

Thousands of species will parade before your eyes, beyond your expectations. Apart from the most representative ones, such as the sloth and the toucan, you will see the Green Basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons), the Green Iguana (Iguana iguana), the Poisonous Red Frog (Oophaga pumilio) and the Coatí (Nasua narica).

We will be able to find, of course, these other fauna species:

  • Sloth
  • Red eyed tree frog
  • Howler Monkey
  • Blue Morpho Butterfly
  • Rainbow-billed Toucan
  • Tapirs
